With more than one out of every three units sold on Amazon.co.uk in the first quarter of 2025 being groceries and household essentials, Amazon has become a go-to destination for grocery shopping for millions of customers across the UK. But, how did we get here?

Over 15 years ago, we started adding groceries and everyday household essentials to Amazon.co.uk that don't require temperature control—items like bulk toilet roll, cleaning products, large packs of canned and boxed food, and bottled drinks. Customers in big cities and rural areas alike loved the convenience of buying these items online and having them delivered quickly.

Prime members can also receive extra savings through the new ‘Prime Member Deals’.

So, over time we’ve lowered our cost-to-serve to cost-effectively add smaller packs of the most-purchased items and a broader selection of low-priced items. These are commonly purchased grocery store items, such as kitchen cupboard staples and snacks, pet care, health and personal care, and household goods like washing up liquid, paper towels, and batteries.

We’ve also learned when customers are shopping for these kinds of products, they typically want them fast. That's why we’ve invested heavily in delivering groceries and household essentials at record speeds.

Over the last few years we've accelerated our delivery speeds for Prime members—2024 was our fastest year yet in the UK—and we offer Same-Day and One-Day delivery on many items.

We’ve improved delivery speeds for customers around the country, invested in advanced technologies across Amazon’s fulfilment centre network, and leveraged AI capabilities to expand the selection of products that we keep as close as possible to customers.

These investments in innovation are paying off for customers, with hundreds of millions of groceries and household essentials delivered the same day or next day in the UK in 2024—an increase of nearly 20% year-over-year.

Additionally, in the first quarter of 2025, our everyday essentials category (encompassing groceries and household essentials) grew more than twice as fast as all other categories in the UK, and represented more than one out of every three units ordered online.

Today, Amazon offers over 2 million grocery and household essential items for delivery across the country. And by working to keep our costs low, we’ve consistently offered the lowest prices across the widest selection.

In fact, last year Amazon was the lowest-priced retailer in the UK for the fifth year running, according to an independent study from Profitero, including on grocery and household essentials categories.

Study finds that Amazon consistently delivers the lowest prices compared to leading UK retailers, helping customers save more.

In addition to the shelf-stable products and household goods available on Amazon.co.uk, Amazon has innovated and invested significantly for nearly a decade to deliver best-in-class selection, low prices, and convenience to make it fast, easy, and affordable for customers to shop perishable groceries through Amazon.

Millions of customers in the UK can use the Amazon website or mobile app to shop fresh food from Amazon Fresh and our UK grocery partners at great prices for convenient delivery and pickup.

By early next year, we plan to more than double the number of UK Amazon Prime members who have access to three or more online grocery delivery options through our partners Morrisons, Iceland, Co-op, and GoPuff, making it even easier to get fresh food and their favourite brands delivered to their doorstep.

Amazon expands grocery offering in the UK

And while online grocery delivery is available to all eligible Amazon customers, Prime members receive special perks, with free Same-Day or One-Day delivery with a two-hour delivery slot (subject to minimum spend) as well as exclusive promotions and savings on items. Customers in the London area are also served by Fresh and Whole Foods Market stores providing additional selection, value, and convenience for customers.

Amazon is offering even more convenient ways to shop for groceries including a new partnership with Iceland and Deliveroo, and a new Amazon Fresh store in London.

Providing groceries and household essentials—the items customers purchase and need most frequently—is core to our mission to make customers lives better and easier every day. While we’re already chosen by millions of UK customers for their grocery shopping needs, we believe there is even greater opportunity in the future to offer more selection, lower prices, and even more convenience to more customers.
