How does the Champions League work?

At the start of last season, the Champions League introduced a league phase to replace the group stage of the competition. This expanded the number of teams from 32 to 36.
Each team has been ranked into four seeding pots. The seeding pots are defined by each club’s five-year UEFA coefficient ranking, with the Champions League titleholder automatically placed as the top seed in Pot 1.
Clubs are then drawn to play two opponents from the different pots at both home and away. A team is not able play another team from their respective country at this stage.
Each result will influence the overall ranking of teams within the new league, with the final round of fixtures taking place on 28 January 2026.
At the end of the league phase, the top eight sides will automatically qualify for the round of 16, which takes place the week of 9 March 2026.
Teams which finish 9th to 24th will compete in a two-legged knockout phase play-off to secure a place in the round of 16. This will take place on the weeks commencing16 February and 23 February 2026.
Teams which finish 25th or lower will be eliminated from the Champions League, with no entry into the Europa League.
How many games are there in the Champions League?

Teams competing in the Champions League play eight matches in the league phase of the competition, with four matches at home and four away.
Those which have failed to qualify directly for the round of 16 will have to play an additional knockout round to progress further in the competition.
From the round of 16 onwards, the tournament will continue as knockout rounds leading to the final.
When is the Champions League final?
The final of the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League takes place on 30 May 2026. The match will be played at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary.
Who are the past winners of the Champions League?
Paris Saint-Germain are the current champions of Europe after having won their first title in last season’s Champions League final against Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena, Munich.
Real Madrid is the most successful team in Champions League history with 15 titles, having last won the competition in 2022.
