Largest corporate buyer of renewable energy
According to Bloomberg NEF, Amazon is the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in 2024 for the fifth year in a row.
In 2019, we set an ambitious goal to match 100% of the electricity consumed by our operations with renewable energy by 2030. This includes all data centres, logistics facilities, physical stores and corporate offices globally, as well as on-site charging points and our financially integrated subsidiaries. We achieved this goal in 2023, seven years early.
More information on how we have achieved this milestone can be found in our Renewable Energy Methodology and in our Sustainability Report.
Over 50% of Amazon deliveries now come with less packaging
Since 2015 Amazon's packaging reduction programmes have helped avoid the use of more than 4 million metric tons of packaging material. We use machine learning, materials innovation, and supplier partnerships to optimize our packaging. This leads to reduced waste and reduced weight, which ultimately helps reduce our carbon emissions. We’re also increasing the recyclability of our packaging for easy curbside recycling for our customers.
Our Ships In Product Packaging (SIPP) program is just one example of how we reduce waste through packaging design and innovation. Through SIPP, eligible items are delivered in the original manufacturer’s packaging without additional Amazon packaging. This allows us to avoid unnecessary packaging and reduce the weight of deliveries.
These innovations have lead to 12% of Amazon packages globally being shipped without additional packaging as part of the Ships in Product Packaging program, 50% of shipments were delivered in lighter, flexible packaging and 38% of shipments were delivered in corrugated boxes.
