Update: This article was originally published 25 June 2026. It was updated on 30 September 2026 with information about the latest Power Purchase agreement for the Mossy Hill wind farm.

Key takeaways

  • Amazon's new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Statkraft's Mossy Hill wind farm near Lerwick builds on its long-term investment in Scottish renewable energy.
  • The wind farm will generate 36 megawatts (MW) under the agreement—enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of more than 57,000 homes annually.
  • Amazon invested more than £3 billion in low-carbon technologies in the UK and supported up to 34,000 jobs between 2021 and 2025, according to independent analysis by Frontier Economics.

Amazon has signed a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with energy developer Statkraft for the Mossy Hill wind farm near Lerwick in Shetland, Scotland—the latest addition to a growing carbon-free energy portfolio that now spans more than 50 projects across the UK.
Once fully operational, these projects will generate more than 1GW of carbon-free energy capacity in the UK, enough to power the equivalent of more than 1.3 million UK households annually.
"Our latest project in the Shetland Islands builds on years of investment in renewable energy across the UK," said John Boumphrey, Amazon UK and Ireland Country Manager.
"From the Shetland Islands to the coasts of England, our renewable energy investments are creating real jobs and powering local communities. Last year we announced our plan to invest £40 billion in the UK by 2027, and the transition to a lower-carbon economy is a part of how we're putting that commitment to work."

Located near Lerwick, Mossy Hill is an onshore wind farm capable of generating enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of more than 57,000 homes annually. Amazon has signed a PPA for 36 MW from the wind farm, which is expected to become operational in November 2030.
The agreement builds on Amazon's long-term investment in renewable energy projects in Scotland and its wider carbon-free energy portfolio across the UK. Amazon has been the UK's largest corporate purchaser of carbon-free energy for five consecutive years, according to BloombergNEF, and its UK portfolio now represents more than 1GW of capacity—enough to power the equivalent of more than 1.3 million households annually.
Kevin O'Donovan, Statkraft's UK and Ireland Country Manager, said: "We're pleased to have agreed a partnership with Amazon for our Mossy Hill Wind Farm in Shetland, which gives us the certainty to move the project forward. Shetland has a proud history of energy production, and as the country shifts towards more homegrown renewable power, we're proud to be playing our part in that transition."

Amazon's renewable energy investment in Scotland

Sustainability Amazon
Mossy Hill is the latest addition to Amazon's growing renewable energy footprint in Scotland, which includes a PPA for the Moray West offshore wind farm in the Moray Firth and the Chirmorie Wind Farm in South Ayrshire—the UK's largest ever onshore wind PPA. Developed by egg Power, Liberty Global's renewable energy infrastructure investment business, the Chirmorie Wind Farm will provide 90 megawatts (MW) of wind energy.
"Signing the UK's largest ever onshore PPA is a landmark moment, not just for egg Power, but for the UK renewable energy sector as a whole," said Ilesh Patel, CEO of egg Power at Liberty Global.
"Our mission is to deliver renewable energy to meet the fast-growing demand for affordable, secure, sustainable electricity from telecoms and digital infrastructure companies. There are large numbers of projects that lack the customers and funding to move them from a vision to reality and we are proud to collaborate with customers like Amazon to turn them into infrastructure as part of the UK's transition to carbon-free energy."
Amazon's sustainability investments in Scotland extend beyond clean energy. Its Dunfermline fulfilment centre doubles as the company's main UK returns centre, where products are assessed, repaired, and resold through Amazon Resale as part of its commitment to building a circular economy. In Glasgow, Amazon operates a micromobility hub using electric cargo bikes for last-mile deliveries, helping to reduce emissions and congestion in the city centre.

Economic impact of Amazon's low-carbon investments

Independent analysis by Frontier Economics shows Amazon's low-carbon investments in the UK totalled more than £3 billion between 2021 and 2025, supporting up to 34,000 jobs and generating up to £2 billion in gross value added for the UK economy.
Amazon has played a catalytic role in scaling renewable electricity capacity in the UK by acting as an anchor offtaker through renewable energy PPAs that have enabled projects to reach deployment.

Supporting UK energy security

At a time when the UK is focused on moving away from expensive, imported gas and toward local renewable power, investments like these help spur the modernisation of energy infrastructure, supporting a more stable, self-reliant grid and helping keep electricity costs affordable for families and businesses.
Amazon's carbon-free energy investments don't just power its own operations—they add brand-new sources of carbon-free energy to the national grid, the same grid that powers homes, hospitals, and schools.
"Our clean energy mission is sparking a boom for investment in wind and solar projects, powering millions of homes and businesses, and creating good jobs across the UK," said Michael Shanks MP, Minister of State for Energy. "This investment milestone by Amazon is another vote of confidence in clean, homegrown energy as the route to energy security, getting bills down for good and tackling the climate crisis."

Part of Amazon's wider UK commitment

Investments like these help to improve grid reliability and infrastructure, power innovation and emerging technologies, and create construction jobs in local areas—key elements of Amazon's £40 billion commitment to the UK between 2025 and 2027.
Amazon's UK investments form part of a wider carbon-free energy portfolio across Europe and its goal under The Climate Pledge to reach net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040. The company has invested in more than 260 carbon-free energy projects across Europe, representing more than 10GW of capacity.
Globally, Amazon has invested in more than 700 renewable energy projects across 28 countries—the largest carbon-free energy portfolio of any corporation in the world, with enough capacity to power the equivalent of 36 million European households annually.
