Once upon a time, there was a group of 25 Beavers from St Albans: they were adventurous and brimming with curiosity. On a Saturday morning, they were invited to take an explorative tour. Their compasses pointed them to an unusual location.
It was a place where hundreds of people work in symphony with leading edge technology. That place was Amazon’s fulfilment centre in Hemel Hempstead, and what the boys experienced was an Amazon Public Tour.
The young explorers were fascinated to see how an unimaginable amount of toys and other items are received into the massive building and to experience how customer orders are picked, packed and shipped. As well as seeing the many products waiting to be ordered, they were thrilled that they even got to have a hands-on experience of packing Amazon’s famous brown boxes.
Open doors
Since March 2015, customers have been invited to take a look behind the scenes of Amazon’s operations by taking an Amazon Public Tour. Intrigued by how Amazon prepares customer orders, over 10,000 visitors - from school classes and Rotary Club members to sellers and customers - have come through the doors of the fulfilment centres in Rugeley, Hemel Hempstead, Dunfermline and, since 2018, the Amazon Robotics fulfilment centres in Manchester and Tilbury, to see for themselves the magic combination of Amazon’s people working with innovative technology.
Our teams have a lot of fun welcoming visitors with all sorts of different interests in Amazon, offering them guided tours and explaining the processes taking place in the fulfilment centres.
