The Orkney Assassin: Murder in the Isles
8 June
The Orkney isles lie 130 miles north of Aberdeen. Remote, beautiful and peaceful, this is a traditional place with a strong sense of community. In June 1994, Bangladeshi waiter Shamsuddin Mahmood was serving a table at the islands’ only curry house, when a masked man burst in and shot him dead at point blank range. The assassin disappeared into the night, leaving the islands reeling. The ensuing manhunt would last 14 years, and lead to the door of one of the police officers at the heart of the investigation. This astonishing documentary revisits one of Scotland’s most extraordinary murder cases, examining racism, loyalty, and the impact of trauma decades on.
