We were one of the first to sign up to the Armed Forces Covenant, a promise to ensure that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly. Early on we recognised how the skills and experiences of Service personnel, from logistics to communication would benefit our business in delivering for customers, so in 2011 we introduced our military veterans recruitment programme in the UK.

Since then, we have employed almost 400 men and women into Operations management and engineering positions across our network, and many have been promoted into senior leadership positions. We’re really proud of the contribution these ex-Service personnel make every day at Amazon.

Recently we were presented with the Armed Forces Covenant Employers Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Award. The award is the Ministry of Defence’s badge of honour for organisations that demonstrate concrete support to Service personnel, veterans, and their families.

A ceremony was held at Trinity House, where along with twenty-five London-based organisations, we received our award from the Rt Hon Tobias Ellwood MP, Minister for Defence People and Veterans, Commodore David Elford, Royal Navy Regional Commander for Eastern England, Brigadier Michael McGovern, Deputy Commander London District and Air Commodore Richard Barrow OBE, Air Commodore Air Staff.

Congratulating the winners on the night, Tobias Ellwood said: “This year’s winners are setting an example to other organisations, showing the wealth of skills and unique experiences the Armed Forces can bring to a wide range of industries. The winners should be proud of the work they are doing to support the Armed Forces Community.”
